Quick Answer
The default Apocalypse day one starts at 9 AM on the 9th; water and power can each die on any day inside 0-2 months, unannounced. Order: clear every room of your start building (bathrooms and closets hide spawns), curtain the windows; loot the nearest houses for a bag, water bottle, blunt weapon, can opener; be near a TV by 12:00 for the Carpentry show; fill every container before sleep — after the shutoff a sink holds ~20 units, a bathtub 100, a dispenser 250, all tainted. If you fight: shove-then-stomp, never below half endurance (-80% damage). Bite 100% fatal, laceration 25%, scratch 7%.

Day-one decision timeline
Day one is a series of narrowing decisions, not a loot sweep. The default Apocalypse start is 9 AM — each window below ends at a stopping point you can verify, not an inventory goal.
| Window | Do exactly this | Stop when |
|---|---|---|
| Opening minutes (9 AM on) | Clear the starting building room by room — sight lines, exits, one zombie at a time: push, stomp, back off | Every room is seen, including closets and the bathroom, and you can leave without a surprise |
| Morning: water and food | Fill every container from the tap (a sink holds about 20 units) and grab canned food plus a can opener | The bag crosses 100% capacity — past it you're 19% slower and it only gets worse |
| Noon: the TV window | Be in front of a working TV by 12:00 — Life and Living airs at 06:00, 12:00, and 18:00 for nine days, then stops forever | The noon Carpentry show is watched, or you know exactly why you missed it |
| Afternoon: shelter | Take a nearby building with a second exit, sheets for the windows, and stairs zombies climb badly | The candidate has one door and no fallback — reject it and keep moving, don't renovate |
| Evening: return | Unload, close the route behind you, and name tomorrow's single bottleneck | Endurance is above half — at 50% used, melee damage is already down 80% and sprinting is gone |
The day-one kit, item by item
The captured items reference prioritizes water containers, non-perishable food, a weapon, bandages, a bag, and a fallback plan. Here is what each item is actually for, with the numbers that decide how much is enough.
| Kit item | Grab it because | You have enough when |
|---|---|---|
| Water containers (bottles, pots) | The water shutoff can land on any day inside the first two months, unannounced. After it, a sink or toilet still holds ~20 units, a bathtub 100, a water dispenser 250 — but all of it is tainted and needs boiling | Every container you own is filled from the tap and stored at your shelter, not left at the looted house |
| Non-perishable food | The power shutoff is its own 0-2 month roll; once it lands, fridges and freezers stop holding. Eat the fresh food today and tomorrow, bank the cans | Two to three days of canned or dry food, plus a can opener — the cans are paperweights without it |
| A blunt weapon | You will meet at least one zombie today. Check the condition bar before you commit: a weapon below half condition can break mid-fight | One weapon above half condition, plus any crowbar or plank as a backup |
| Bandages | An unbandaged bleed drains health through the whole walk home, and one more hit turns a scratch into a worse wound | A handful of ripped sheets or bandages in a pocket, not buried in the bag |
| A bag | Carry capacity past 100% means 19% slower movement and slower endurance recovery — the bag is what keeps your loot trips under the line | You can carry the kit plus one loot category without hitting the heavy-load moodle |
| A fallback building | If the way home fills up, you need somewhere within two streets to sleep tonight | You've noted one building you could defend for a night, with a door that closes |
If today is the day you fight
Most day-one deaths are one zombie, fought badly, with no endurance left. The loop that wins is learnable in one afternoon.
The loop: let the zombie walk to you, shove it down with the push attack, then stomp it while it's on the ground — a downed zombie being stomped can't grab you. Push-stomp costs less endurance and almost no weapon condition, and on day one 'slower' is exactly what you want. Fight in doorways and hallways where they come single file, and never let one stand behind you: rear attacks carry a much higher chance of severe injury.
Watch the endurance bar, not the zombie count. At 25% endurance used you're already doing 50% less melee damage; at 50% used damage is down 80% and sprinting is disabled; at 90% you're doing 95% less damage and walking 75% slower — being chased in that state is how day-one characters die. Walk between fights, and stop fighting at the half bar, not when things look bad.
And know what a hit means before you take one: a bite is 100% fatal Knox infection by default, a laceration carries 25%, a scratch 7%. Bandage everything, quarantine a wounded character from your plans, and watch for the Queasy moodle over the following days. The bandage costs nothing; panic and denial cost whole saves.
Before dark: the four-item finish line
Day one ends successfully when all four of these are true. Anything else you accomplished today was a bonus; any of these missing means the day isn't over.
Reference data
The first-day item order is a community reference for an opening run — not a complete loot table.
| Priority | Grab it | Why it's early |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Water containers | Immediate carrying and water planning |
| 2 | Non-perishable food | Reliable short-route supply |
| 3 | Weapon and bandages | Basic defense and injury response |
| 4 | Bag | Doubles your useful haul |
| 5 | First fallback | Keeps the first loot run from becoming a full-town commitment |
FAQ
What time does Project Zomboid start on day one?
The default Apocalypse game opens at 9 AM on the 9th of the month. That start time sets your first deadline: the Life and Living Carpentry show airs at 12:00, so you have three hours to clear your start building and find a working TV. The 06:00 Cooking slot is already gone; the 18:00 slot is your catch-up if noon slips.
Should I loot my whole street on the first day?
No — every extra street is a street you walk back through, tired, in the dark. Loot the two or three houses nearest your start for the kit (bag, water bottle, weapon, can opener, bandages, non-perishable food), then consolidate. The full-town sweep is a week-two activity with a vehicle.
When should I worry about the water shutting off?
Immediately. In the default sandbox the water shutoff rolls on any day inside 0-2 months, with no broadcast warning — day one is a legitimate possibility. Fill every container today: after the shutoff, sinks and toilets still hold about 20 units each, bathtubs 100, and water dispensers 250, but all of it is tainted and must be boiled.
What do I do if I get bitten on day one?
Accept the loss: a bite is 100% fatal Knox infection by default. A laceration carries 25% odds and a scratch 7% — those are 'quarantine and watch' wounds, not write-offs. Bandage the wound, mark the day, and watch for the Queasy moodle over the following days. Spend the bitten character's remaining time deliberately: scout, haul, or aggro zombies away from your supplies.
Is it better to stay in my spawn building or move?
Move if the spawn is in a dense block or has one exit; stay if it's an edge-of-town house you've fully cleared. The checklist version: every room cleared (bathrooms and closets hide spawns), windows curtained, two ways out, and a fallback building within two streets noted before dark.
