Build 42 Quality of Life Mods

Quick Answer

A QoL mod earns its slot by killing a specific annoyance you hit every session — and the captured Build 42 sample has the compatibility data on record: Over the Shoulder (42.20+, tested 42.21, single-player, safe mid-save), Heart Health Meter (42.20+, SP/host/dedicated, safe mid-save), Dynamic Gear Rattling (MP works, dedicated untested, safe to add AND remove mid-save), True Cargo (42.15+, order-independent, MP untested). The risk hierarchy: UI/QoL is lowest-risk, loot and vehicle mods depend on unvisited cells, map mods are unsupported for casual mid-save changes. Test solo before stacking.

Why QoL is the right place to start modding

The mid-game risk reference draws a class boundary every modder should know before their first subscription: UI and quality-of-life changes are the lower-risk class; loot and vehicle changes can depend on unvisited map cells; map mods are unsupported for casual mid-save changes at all.

That hierarchy exists because of when the mod's code runs. A UI overlay reads the game state and draws on top of it — if it breaks, it breaks visibly and reversibly. A loot or vehicle mod changes what the world generates, which means cells your save hasn't visited yet will be different after you enable it, and cells you have visited may disagree with the new rules. A map mod redraws the world itself, which is why the reference treats even adding one casually as unsupported.

So the QoL class is where the 'test it solo on a clean save' routine is cheapest, and it's also where the captured sample is strongest: three of the four items above are author-flagged safe to add mid-save, and the fourth (True Cargo) is order-independent — the friendliest failure profile in modding. That's not an accident; QoL authors self-select for careful scope because their audience is everyone.

The discipline that keeps a QoL stack healthy is the same as any stack: one item at a time, one visible feature proven before the next, and the author's compatibility wording captured at subscribe time ('safe to add' versus 'safe to add and remove' versus 'tested on dedicated' are three different promises). Subscriber counts don't appear anywhere in that workflow for a reason — they measure downloads, not your save's survival.

FAQ

What are the best QoL mods for Build 42?

From the captured sample: Over the Shoulder (42.20+, tested 42.21, single-player, safe mid-save), Heart Health Meter (42.20+, SP/host/dedicated, safe mid-save), Dynamic Gear Rattling (MP works, dedicated untested, safe to add and remove mid-save), and True Cargo (42.15+, order-independent, MP untested on a server). Each kills a specific annoyance — that's the selection criterion, not subscriber count.

Are QoL mods safe to add to an existing save?

The QoL class is the lowest-risk tier — the mid-game reference separates UI/QoL changes from loot and vehicle changes (which depend on unvisited map cells) and map mods (unsupported for casual mid-save changes). In the sample, three of four authors explicitly flag mid-save safety. Still: back up, add one item, prove one visible feature.

Do QoL mods work on multiplayer servers?

Per item — read the exact wording. Heart Health Meter records single-player, local host, AND dedicated support; Dynamic Gear Rattling says multiplayer works but dedicated servers were untested; Over the Shoulder is single-player only; True Cargo's MP design is 'ready' but untested on a server. 'Works in multiplayer' and 'tested on a dedicated server' are different claims.

How many QoL mods is too many?

There's no recorded count limit — the risk is interaction, not number. Two mods redoing the same UI element can conflict even when each works alone, and any unrecorded stack becomes undiagnosable after a game patch (see the 127-mod 42.21 report). One at a time, one proven feature each, and a written list keeps any stack manageable.
